I bet you’ve always wondered what you get when you mix swing with hip-hop beats and lay rapid-fire Swedish rap on top. Yeah, me too. MOVITS! finished off their US tour by performing at CMU. They hail from Luleå, Sweden and received much deserved attention in the US after performing on the Colbert Report. The lyrics are in Swedish but it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand them. They’re fresh and exciting and the beats will keep your toe tapping. Highly recommended.

Homecoming weekend was this week so there has been a lot of alumni around and stuff going on at pretty much all waking hours of the day. At the kick-off on Friday there was live music from a variety of bands, food, and all sorts of other stuff including Quasi the robot and fireworks! Cellofourte, a cello quartet from the Pittsburgh area, really caught my attention though.

Usually when you think cello you think classical music, but these guys were definitely not playing classical music. It’s a cross between rock and classical which makes for a unique blending of sound that will send chills up your spine. Seeing them live was mind blowing. You could tell they were really getting into because they would all standup and start headbanging–yes, headbanging. Coolest thing ever. Leave it to CMU to break the mold. Oh, did I mention they’re CMU alumni?

Definitely check them out on iTunes.

Minutes To Midnight is different from anything Linkin Park has done in the past I think. A lot of the new songs like “In Between” and “The Little Pieces Give You Away” are less “angry” and seem more “In The End”-esque. Although there is still the fast paced “Bleed It Out” which I’ve listened to far too many times in the past couple days.

I thought I wouldn’t like it, but its beginning to grow on me. There is more focus on the lyrics and its easy to listen to. Overall I think Minutes To Midnight is a great album; I just hope it won’t take as long to make the next one.
