2008 Portland Flugtag
The Red Bull Flugtag event is a testament of human ingenuity, foolishness, and love for watching things crash. My friends and I went down to the Waterfront today and watched as teams flew their man-powered flying creations off a 30 foot deck into the water. Some of them glided for a few short seconds, but all succumbed to gravity in an epic collision of flying machine meets water.
80,000 people gathered at the Waterfront to watch people soar into the Willamette River. We managed to get a good (but rather uncomfortable) seats close to the water. There were people watching on boats, all along the Hawthorne Bridge, in trees, and even in the buildings behind us. It was crazy to say the least but really fun. Maybe we’ll actually participate in the next flugtag…
Here are some pics I took of the event. It’s hard to understand unless you see it.
